29A- Venture Concept No. 2

Opportunity- The opportunity is that people will always need to have their lawn taken care of when they own a home.  Many people will do this themselves but there will be so many that will not because they are physically unable or they do not have enough time.  There will always be an opportunity in Florida where my business will be based.  Year round is hot and there is a little portion of the year when it is cold.  In the summer when it rains almost everyday most people will have to have their lawn taken care of at least once a week.  This opportunity will always be present and never go away as long as people have lawns.  The opportunity is also present among real estate companies that are trying to sell homes and also cities and counties that need medians and land taken care of.

Innovation- Every service involving landscaping would be included in this business.  It would include:  lawn mowing, blowing, weed eating, edging, tree trimming, stump grinding, sod removal and installation, gutter and roof cleaning, and gardening.  We will always adapt to the times and make improvements.  We will get all the newest and best equipment to best service our customers.  We will start at basic mowing, edging, and blowing starting at fifty dollars and up depending on the size of the yard.  Next we will begin to incorporate tree trimming that will start at fifty dollars per hour.  We will continue to upgrade our services to scale our business.  Once more crew members are added, we will be able to add more types of services.

Venture Concept- The reason customers should switch to my service instead of any other landscaping business is because our customer service will be top notch.  We will treat our customers with the utmost respect.  We will offer incentives to our customers so that they know we appreciate their business. Every so many cuts we will offer a free cut for the customer.  There will be many competitors in this field.  We will offer outstanding work with: attention to detail, top notch customer service, and affordable prices.

I will be a servant leader and treat my employees with respect and kindness.  I will treat my employees as I am serving them rather then they are serving me.

Once I have one crew going strong then I will develop more teams to scale up the business.

I would like to have my hand in a few different businesses in five years after start up.  I would like to diversify my portfolio by doing different services for people.  The more services I am offering means the more opportunities and I am solving.

Above is my original venture concept. I will put my revisions below.

I did not receive any comments on my venture concept No. 1.  The only thing about the opportunity that I would do differently is I would have to think about the seasons.  Obviously in the spring, summer, and fall it would rain often and there would be a big need for landscaping.  In the winter time it would be very slow and I would have to look for other things to do to keep the business going.  I would probably do fertilizer treatments to keep peoples yards looking good because of the lack of rain.  Instead of just households I could do landscaping for businesses and realtors.  I would do raffles to let the customers get free work done to their house.  That would be a good incentive to get people to stay with my business.  Obviously there is a lot of competition in this business.  We would stay up to date with all new techniques and equipment.  I will always ask my customers what I can do to better serve them.

30A- Final Reflection

I have loved this class since the very first week I was in it.  I have honestly never had a class that made me want to watch every lecture.  The exercises were so fun and engaging.  They challenged me and helped me to grow as a person.  It has helped me to develop an entrepreneurial mindset.  I find myself all the time finding opportunities and trying to figure out ways to solve the problem.  I find myself trying to find a way to fix five to six different problems a day.  I would recommend this class to anybody who wants to try and go out to be an entrepreneur.  It will help you grow as a business person.  It is a great class to help with problems in life in general.  The first week of finding opportunities was tough.  Once i started practicing finding opportunities, it began to just occur naturally.  I am so happy that I took this course even though I am not a business major.

28A- Your Exit Strategy

I would love to work at this business to decades and retire from it.  It would be awesome to be able to run a successful business for years and be able to sell the business for a big return.  It would be ideal to retire around 50 years old and live out my years spending time with my family and friends.  I have selected this particular exit strategy because if I sold the business in five years I would not have enough money to be able to retire.  I do not want to sell the business if I can not live off of the money for the rest of my life.  I believe that my exit strategy has influenced my decisions for my concept.  That is why I will always have the business growing.  That way when I am going to retire my I will have plenty of money to support me because the business will be big.

27A- Reading Reflection No. 3

1.  The one thing that surprised more than anything else was the reason why he chose the name for the company Apple.  Not only did he like apples, he said that apple comes before Atari in the phonebook.  The thing I admire the most about Steve Jobs is how he created such an amazing brand and company that is recognized worldwide today.  The only thing I do not admire him for is that he seemed arrogant.  I believe that this also led to him being so successful.  He definitely experienced adversity and failure.  He was fired from the company he started.  He ended up coming back and becoming the CEO of Apple and bringing the company so much success.

2.  His biggest competencies would be hard work, determination, and passion.

3.  The only thing I would say that us confusing to me is the fact that you can be fired from a company that you start.  It is crazy that he got fired and then came back to the company.  So many people would be bitter about being fired and not come back.

4.  I would ask him how he just kept going after any failures and setbacks that he had.  I would also ask him why he went back to apple after they fired him.

5.  I think that his opinion of hard work is that it is everything that needs to be done make something a success.  He knows that there is no way that you can become successful without hard work.  I do share that opinion with him.

26A- Celebrating Failure

Failure is something people will always experience.  If you are not failing then you are not pushing yourself.  If you would have asked me a few months ago I would have told you that I do not like failure.  Now I enjoy it because I look at failure as a new lesson I am learning in life.  Earlier this year I experienced a big failure.  I was attempting to start a business to start selling items on ebay for a profit.  I was buying items at thrift stores and at garage sales on the weekend.  I listed all of the items on ebay and was waiting for them to sell.  I cam home one day and all of my items that I was going to sell were stolen by a family member.  It was a big failure because people had purchased a couple of the items and I needed to ship them.  The lesson I learned was to lock away my items beause I can not trust people to not steal them.

23A-Your venture's unfair advantage

1.  Premier customer service
It is rare with existing companies.  They let customer service after they make it big like Wal Mart.  This is what will separate me from the rest.  Extremely valuable.
2.  Attention to detail
Not very rare, but this can separate you from other companies.
3.  Creativity
This is not rare, but the possibilities are endless.  It is extremely valuable.
4.  Efficiency
not rare and can easily be replicated.
5.  Ability to get financial capital from a lender
Not rare and easy to obtain
6.  Mentors in the same business field
This one of the most valuable items to obtain on this list.  It is rare to find.
7.  Able to perform any landscape need
Many people can do this but it is valuable.
8.  No shortage of workers
This is valuable because you need employees to survive as a business.
9.  Training employees
Training employees is an extremely valuable asset.  It is not rare, but I know with large companies they lack good training.
10.  Being a servant leader
This is an extremely valuable asset to a business.  You want to treat your employees like they are the king and you are serving them.  It is extremely rare in business and I believe it to be essential to make employees happy.

I believe that number ten is the top resource on this list.  Everybody looks to the leader for motivation and examples of how to work.  Being a servant leader is an essential quality for an amazing and unique leader.  If you respect your employees and make them feel like kings and queens they will love to do quality work for you.

21A- Reading Reflection No. 2

The general them from this book was lessons about life and working that Scott Adams learned throughout his life while working and failing at certain aspects of life.  He breaks them down simply to teach these simple but important lessons about life and business.  It teaches you that entrepreneurship is not easy and there will be failures.  That is something that I learned in this class also.  Another thing is that your attitude has to be in the right place to succeed.   If you constantly have a negative attitude then it will draw negative results.  It would be an exercise to show you that you do not need wildly successful billionaires and executives to teach you things about being successful.  It could be an exercise about asking five random friends questions about giving ideas about a business you are doing.  Then you go over the ideas and see if they change any aspect of the business you were thinking about.  Honestly the idea in the previous question about designing an experiment for the class is what most surprised me.  It is the most unique takeaway I had from this book.

20A- Growing Your Social Capital

1. Domain Expert- Eduardo Rosquete is someone I have met that is in the same lawn care business field that my business would be in.  He has had a lawn care business for 15 years.  I was working with Eduardo at Publix because he had Publix as a second job.  I used to help him a lot at work with different problems at Publix.  He offered me help with giving me insight into helping me start a lawn business.

2. Market Expert- Ralph Daniels  is a lawn equipment repairman that has been involved in the industry for over 30 years.  I found him through Eduardo Rosquete because thats where he goes for for lawn equipment repairs.  I will give him business by letting him work on my lawn equipment.  He will help me by giving me pointers in the industry.

3. Supplier- Cutter Power is a shop in Tampa that specializes in all lawn equipment.  I met the business by doing a quick google search for a lawn equipment salesman.  I will buy equipment from them and then they will give me pointers of the proper equipment to buy that will worthwhile.

I believe  all three of these people will help me enormously and help to show me new opportunities.  I think they will help me to find new contacts in the industry and expand my business.  In the future I will always talk to as many people as I can and collect as much information about the field as I can.

19A- Idea Napkin No. 2

1.  I am Peter Murray and I am best at landscaping and making people's yard look great.  My aspirations are to start a lawn company and grow it to be the most successful lawn company in Tampa.  I am sure that starting the company and growing it to be the biggest will take a huge toll on my personal life.  I would be willing to sacrifice that to make it successful.

2.  I will offer my services to make their lawn perfect and up to their standards.  I will cut lawns, blow off decks and driveways, clean gutters, and trim trees.  I will do anything at their house involving landscaping that they need.

3.  I would love to service wealthy clients in the South Tampa area.  They are always on the run and do not have the time to take care of their own lawn.  They also have the money to pay someone else to do their yard.

4.  My customers all have the same thing in common.  Time is the most valuable asset.  They do not have time to do their own yard.  They have the disposable income and they are willing to pay someone else to do it so they can spend time on other things they find more important.

5.  Honestly there is not much that separates one landscaping service from another.  The only things I can think of is exceptional customer service, incentives for discounted or free service, and hard work.

I wrote exactly the same thing that I had in the first napkin idea exercise.  I only received positive feedback and nothing was said about what you could make it better.  I know it is not perfect but I did my best and I can not change it because I did not have any negative feedback.

I only received positive feedback so there was nothing to revise on this exercise.

18A-Create a customer avatar

My customer would be working adults that do not have time to take care of their own yard.  They would be wealthy people that do not mind paying for someone else to do their lawn work.  Their hobbies would be book club and golfing.  The wife will be watching Dr. Oz and the husband will be watching Sports Center.  I would say that the wife drives a white Mercedes SUV and the husband drives a silver Tesla sedan.  They absolutely have children and the wife takes them to school and their after school activities.  The husband works long hours and gets home late at night and leaves early in the morning.  These customers only have time on the weekend to do their lawn work...but they have everything else to do too.  They have to do other chores like laundry and grocery shopping.  If they can pay somebody to take care of the yard work they will.  I do not have anything in common with this avatar because I am willing to just do the yard work myself because I have the time to take care of it myself.

15A- Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 2

After interviewing these three people I have realized a few things about potential clients in this business.  I have concluded a few things based on these interviews.  People will take quality over a cheaper price.  People would rather pay top dollar for quality tree trimming.  They like to have their yard look perfect and they will pay for it. People will also usually always shop online when looking for tree trimming services.  It is currently the easiest way to look for new lawn services.  Two said they rather pay with credit card and the other said she would rather use cash.  They said personal pride in how their lawn looked was the biggest factor in getting their trees trimmed.  They said that when someone compliments their trees that is what makes them feel good about their purchase.  Sometimes they think that they should be spending money on other things.  I would say that it really makes me happy that people will pay for quality over quantity.

13A-Reading Reflection No. 1

1.  It surprised me that they had no schooling and that they were just bike mechanics.  I would have to say that the answer is the same to previous question.  I admire that someone without schooling can do something so great.  They attempted several times to fly the plane and failed many times.  They kept trying and changing things until they got it right.

2.  One thing I noticed is they were obviously good at being mechanics and working on things with their hands.

3.  The one thing I would say is I always see it as confusing when people from such humble backgrounds are able to overcome and achieve goals when they come from nothing.

4.  I would ask them how did they deal with failure? I just want to know if it bothered them or just made them work harder.   How amazing did it feel when you had the first success?  I want to know how great it must have felt to finally get it right.

5.  I believe their opinion of hard work is to wake up and give it your all when working on your goal.  It is to give up some personal life to achieve your goal.  I completely agree with them on what is hard work.

12A-Figuring Out Buyer Behaivor No. 1

The segment that I chose for the interviews is tree trimming.  This is just a small segment of the landscaping business that I have chose to do.  I asked five people if I could interview them until I found three that said they had this need.  They said it is pretty clear cut that once a month or every few weeks they like to have their trees trimmed to keep them properly groomed.  The general consensus was that they used the internet to find someone to trim their trees.  One used craigslist and the other two just used google.  They said that they just type in "tree trimming Tampa" to find someone locally to service their tree trimming needs.  I learned that when people need their trees trimmed, or probably any landscaping for that matter, they will probably go to the internet to find someone to do the job.  I ask them if they would ask friends and family.  Two said they did not think of that and that they would ask friends or family next time they need it done.  The other one said she would rather seek reviews on the internet for a reputable company in Tampa.  I realized that they already knew they had this need.  I imagine most people are pretty aware if they need their trees trimmed.  I was surprised that the one person did not trust the advice of friends and family and would rather go on the internet and listen to strangers.

I originally was under the impression that I had thought of every aspect of this business.  It is obvious that I have not.  Before this exercise I did not think of what would separate me from other landscaping businesses.  I will think long and hard and try to think of every aspect of this business.

9A-Testing the hypothesis, pt. 2

Who?  I believe that the reason there are people with opportunity but not the need is because there are plenty of people and business owners that are perfectly fine mowing their own yard.  They can handle doing all the yard work and do not have to worry about paying someone else to do it.  There are also people that can not afford to pay for it.

What?  It could be linked to the need of trying to have your yard look beautiful.  It also could be that they live in a Home Owners Association neighborhood and they are required to have their yard properly groomed.

Why?  The need would be the same because most people need to take care of their lawn and trees.  I only had one person that did not have this need because they said that their land lord takes care of their lawn.

Inside the Boundary                                           Outside the boundary
People who need their lawn taken care of          people who handle it themselves
lawn maintenance taken care of                         lawn not taken care of
People can not do their own lawn                      people do it themselves

Friday, September 21, 2018

8A-Solving the Problem

The opportunity is that people need their lawn taken care of when they can not do it themselves.  I will be offering a full service lawn care business.  I will  cut peoples grass, trim their trees, edge their sidewalks, blow out their gutters, and also blow off driveways.  There will always be a need for people to get their landscaping done.  Living in Florida the grass always needs to be done at least every two weeks and sometimes once a week.  If I offer an all around service where they will not have to do anything outside of their house or business, they would be satisfied.  People are working more than ever and if people have the money they will always pay for convenience.  There is competition in lawn care because there is a lot of lawn companies.  I want a lawn company that will draw out a plan for the lawn care that will be done and offer better customer service than any other lawn service company.

7A-Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

1.  I would like pursue an all around lawn service business.
2.  The who would be: homeowners, real estate companies, businesses, strips of vacant land owned by county or state.  The what is that people and agencies are not able to do their own lawn care needs. The why would be that there are many people that who do not have time, can not physically do the job, or just do not want to do it.
3.  I believe everyone in my who share this need.  Anybody who has property and does not or can not do it themselves.  Some people will have their why because of multiple reasons including:  not enough time to do it, or they do not have the capability of doing it themselves.
4.  While interviewing the five people I have seen that some of the people have this opportunity (4 out of 5).  They seemed happy with the idea of not having to worry about their yard since they have so many things to do and no time.  Some peoples need stemmed from not enough time (3 out of 5).  The other two people's opportunity stemmed from not being able to physically do it themselves.  Overall it seems this a big opportunity.  The only thing I was not expecting was that two of the four that have this opportunity could not afford to pay someone to do it.

6A-Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

1.  How to fix being an impulsive buyer
a.  I found the article on Yahoo Finance.
b.  The problem is that there are impulsive spenders and can not manage their finances.  The opportunity is to possibly create a business to help them manage their money.
c.  Young adults would probably be the most impulsive spenders.  Lets say 18-30 would probably be the age range.
d.  I believe the problem would be easy to exploit.  There are so many people out there that are impulsive spenders and can not manage their own finances.
I am sure that other people would have seen this opportunity.  I would think that my own problems with managing money led me to form this opportunity into a business idea

2.  How to prioritize debt and payoff what needs to be gotten rid of first.
a.  I found the article of Yahoo Finance.
b.  The problem is that are people that have gotten into a lot of debt and do not know where to start when trying to pay it off.  The opportunity is to advise people on prioritizing debt and paying off the right ones first.
c.  Again, I would have to say young adults, but probably from 21-35 years of age.
d.  I believe this problem would be easy to exploit.  America lives on debt and so many Americans do not even understand it.  They just say "hey there willing to give a car or house and al I have to do is make a monthly payment, sign me up."  They do not understand the interest or any aspect of it.
Other people I am sure have seen this problem.  I see the opportunity as a business because I use to struggle about prioritizing debt.  I did a lot of research and I am now good at prioritizing debt.  It was hard work that most people would rather pay someone to do than to just do it themselves.

3.   priority invasive species that need to be taken out of Florida
a.  I found it on laws.flrules.org
b.  An opportunity is present for a trapper to take out these invasive species
c.  people who are outdoors a lot, and know the wildlife.
d.  This one might a little troublesome to exploit because it is a niche thing for people to get into.  I love wildlife and this is something that I would be interested in.
4.  law to help parents not have to put up child for adoption.  It is trying to keep families together
a.  I found it on regulations.gov
b.  There should be parenting class to help families succeed and not have to put their kids up for adoption.
c.  It would be for young adult parents that do not know much about parenting.
d.  It might be difficult to exploit because many parents might not want to seek help because they are embarrassed.  I was once a young parent and it was difficult.

An error occurred in end of the year tax papers will cost county employees a lot of money.
The problem is that some county employees are going to lose a total of around $500,000.
The problem will occur for the county employees whose tax records were screwed up.

4A-Forming an opportunity belief

I believe that an opportunity exists in that people need to go to the bank after regular business hours and on the weekends but there is no bank open at that time.  The unmet met need is that people always need the banks when they are closed.  I believe that everybody who has ever needed money when the bank was closed has this opportunity.  It is no certain demographic, gender, or group of people that this applies to specifically.  I believe that this need has always existed.  As far back as I can tell they usually are just regular business hours.  People try to fix this by using an ATM but sometimes there are things that can not be done through an ATM.  I am about sixty percent sure that this opportunity exists.

first prototypical customer:  Do you ever need to go to the bank when it is closed? Yes, sometimes I find myself needing the bank when it is closed.  Do you experience this need sometimes, often, or hardly ever? Now that I think about it, I hardly ever need to go in the bank when it is closed.  How long have you had this need? I cant remember the first time that it occurred, but it happened a long time ago.  How do you deal with this need, and are you satisfied with this solution?  I usually just wait until the next day because it is not a huge inconvenience.

second prototypical customer:  Do you ever need to go to the bank when it is closed? Yes, but I can just go to the ATM and withdraw money if I need to.  What if you need to cash a check though? I can go to Amscott.  Yes you can, but there is a big fee when they cash your check.  Well I can not argue with you there.  How often do you find that you need this?  Not too often, but it does happen sometimes.  How long have you had this need?  Ever since I started getting checks from my job.  Are you satisfied with your solution when you go to Amscott to cash your check?  It works for cashing my checks but the fees are really high.

third prototypical customer:  Do you ever need to use the bank when it is closed?  Maybe one time I have had that problem, but it was not a problem.  How long have you had this need?  It happened one time a couple of years ago when I needed to go to speak to someone at the bank about problems with my account, but I just waited until the next morning.  Do you think that an after hours bank would benefit you?  No, I do not believe I have a big enough need for an after hours bank.

I realized that the people I interviewed did not find it as big of an opportunity as I did.  They were pretty similar in saying that their need was not very much.  There was not a huge need from these people.
I learned that there is not as big of an opportunity for this solution as I thought.  Although it seems like a good idea to me, other people might not have a huge need for this.  In hindsight it is not the best idea for a business.  I believe consumer feedback is a great way to see if your idea is a good idea.

3A-Your entrepreneurship story

A few years ago I was in a tight spot financially and wanted to make some extra money.  I did not want to work for two bosses at the same time so I tried to do something myself.  I bought a lawn mower, a leaf blower, and a string trimmer.  I started going from door to door asking people if I could mow their yards.  I eventually had six consistent yards on the outside of my full time job.  I quickly realized that being your own boss is not as easy as it sounds.  It is great in the sense that you can make your own rules.  The hard thing is that I was putting in all of the work by myself.  It made it hard on days when I did not feel like getting back in the sun and sweating all morning.  The one great thing was that any money I made was all mine and what I could make was up to me.

I needed one elective for my major and I was looking through the list and saw this class.  I thought to myself that I want to be a business owner one day and I knew this class would pertain to that.  I am hoping that this class will help me hone and think about concepts of entrepreneurship that I would not have thought about.  I believe this class will make me a better entrepreneur.  It will help me develop skills that I need in business.

PT Barnum is my favorite entrepreneur of all time

2A-Bug List

1.  I hate when I am shaving and I get cuts and razor bumps on my neck and face.
I have sensitive skin.

2.  I hate the fact that every time I dry a load of clothes I have to empty the lint filter.
The lint falls off of clothing and the filter catches it.

3.  The fact that my bank is only open weekdays and only open until 4pm.
That is the standard time most banks have,

4.  I do not like that I have to shave every day before going into work at Publix.
It is a rule that Publix has had since there first opened.

5.  I hate sitting in rush hour traffic on Veterans Expressway in Tampa.
Everybody is leaving work to drive away from Tampa from 430pm-600pm.

6.  I have to sharpen my lawn mower blade every couple of weeks.
The wet grass constantly dulls the blade.

7.  I do not like that there is no one single streaming service that has all movies and tv shows.  You have to have multiple to watch everything you want.
Nobody owns the rights to stream all movies.

8.  I do not like that online gaming used to be free and now you have to pay a yearly subscription.
If you can offer a service, why not make money off of it?

9.  There are certain notification settings on Instagram that I want to change but I can not.
It is so that you can see all notifications and it might make you open the app.

10.  I do not like doing an oil change every 3,000 miles in my 1994 Dodge Dakota.
It is an older truck and needs it more frequent than most newer cars.

11.  I do not like the fact that some applications are not available for my Iphone.
Android and IOS have different rights for applications and what is on their app store.

12.  It bugs me that people conform and do things a certain way because other people do it that way.
people feel more comfortable going with the flow than being original.

13.  I hate the fact that you have to tip when being served at steak and shake.
In America waiters/waitresses get paid a low wage and rely on tips to get paid well.

14.  I hate that when I take my car to get serviced they magically find ten more things wrong with my car.
People will try and take advantage of you if they can.

15.  It bugs me when I forget to buy toothpaste at the grocery store.
It is not fun to go the day without brushing your teeth.

16.  It bugs me that all the fishing spots I had as a kid are almost extinct.
People are buying all the waterfront properties and building apartment complexes and houses.

17.  I hate shopping at Walmart on the weekends.
There is always a ton of people and only two registers open so it takes forever to check out.

18.  I hate the fact that my shower head barely pushes out any water.
It is old and should be replaced.

19.  It bugs me that I need more than two hdmi cords that need to be plugged in my tv and there is only two ports.
The tv company only designed it with two ports.

20.  I hate the fact that when I send something to the trash on my computer, I still have to go empty the trash.
Probably a safety net so you do not accidentally destroy something you need.

It was fairly difficult for me to come up with a list of twenty things that bug me.  At first I thought to myself, this is easy.  I started and once I got to about number five, I was stumped.  I spent the next week thinking about it as much as I could.  It took me until the last day of the assignment and I finally got to twenty things that bug me.  When I asked the question "Why is it a bug?" it was not all that hard for me to answer the question.  I was amazed at how many things bugged me.  These are things that need to be fixed!
